SMA Radial Contraction Ring

The Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) Radial Contraction Ring is a compact, solid-state actuator designed to deliver precise, inward radial force upon thermal activation. Made from corrosion-resistant NiTi alloy, the ring contracts uniformly when heated above its transformation threshold, enabling clean and repeatable release or locking actions in underwater and aerospace systems.

Technical Specifications

  • Shape Memory Alloy Tube Specifications Phase Transformation Temperature:
    ≥ 70°C, 80°C, or 90°C
  • Diameter Recovery Performance under 10% Expansion Strain:
    Recovery Strain (ε₀): ≥ 3%
Recovery Stress (σᵣ): ≥ 600 MPa

Typical Applications

Underwater docking systems for robotic submersibles - Payload release clamps for deep-sea scientific instruments - Emergency disconnection mechanisms for tethers or ballast modules - Silent actuation systems for maritime or defense applications Case Example: Deep-Sea Release Clamp In a 4500-meter depth scientific payload release system, the SMA radial contraction ring is thermally triggered to contract around a frangible locking sleeve. The radial inward force induces structural release without shock or residue. System performance includes 6kN release force, < 5s response time, and over 30 reuse cycles under full ocean pressure (60 MPa).

Technical Advantages:

Zero-shock release (impact < 200g)

No pyrotechnic residue (complies with ISO 14000 environmental standards)
